Municipality of Veenendaal: faceted post-top luminaires in a residential area
In a residential area of Veenendaal, faceted gem-shaped post-top luminaires with an opal diffuser and warm white 3000 K light give a calm streetscape and good facial recognition. What this project teaches and how you build the same with POLARIS and TURRIS.

The project in brief
Veenendaal lies in the Gelderse Vallei, in the province of Utrecht. In one of the municipality's residential areas the street lighting has been replaced by post-top luminaires cut like a gemstone: a design luminaire in which technology and appearance come together. By day the faceted housing is a recognisable object on the column, in the evening the opal diffuser spreads a soft, even light on carriageway and footpath.
Warm white light of 3000 K was chosen, on columns of 4 to 5 metres. This matches the scale of a residential street and keeps the neighbourhood looking calm.
Why a design luminaire in a residential area
In a residential area the lighting is seen in daytime as well. A post-top with a clear shape adds something to the streetscape and is simple to mount as well: it slides over the column spigot and is fixed with clamping screws, with no bracket arm. A symmetrical light distribution lights the carriageway and the pavements on both sides at once, which suits narrow neighbourhood streets.
Lighting technology: 3000 K, opal diffuser and 1,500 lumens
An opal diffuser spreads the light over the whole surface of the luminaire. Luminance stays low, glare is limited and faces remain clearly recognisable at walking distance. For residential streets and home zones an average of 3 to 5 lux is common, depending on the lighting class; 1,500 lumens at a 4 metre mounting height can be sufficient for this. The achievable column spacing depends on the road width and the lighting class and follows from a lighting calculation.
Warm white 3000 K looks friendlier than 4000 K, is generally experienced as less intrusive by residents and is therefore chosen by many municipalities for residential areas.
How to build this with the Lichtplein range
The POLARIS series includes a faceted gem-shaped post-top with a nano-opal diffuser of UV-stabilised polycarbonate, in RAL 9005 black (LP-PO105) or RAL 7045 grey (LP-PO106). The luminous flux is 1,500 lumens at 3000 K, the power lies between 6 and 16 W, with an efficacy of up to 229 lm/W. The luminaire is IP67, IK10, protection class II and dimmable, and fits a 60 mm column spigot at a mounting height of 4 to 5 metres.
As a column, the 4 metre conical steel column from TURRIS fits, hot-dip galvanised or powder-coated in RAL 9005, so that column and luminaire share the same colour. If you prefer aluminium, choose the 4 metre column from CIVIS. The column cut-out box and fuses come from NEXUS.
Points of attention for the installer
- Spigot size: this luminaire needs a 60 mm column spigot. On existing columns, measure the diameter first.
- Order sequence: steel columns have a lead time of 3 to 5 weeks, aluminium columns 4 to 6 weeks; luminaires ship from European stock within 5 working days. Order the columns first.
- Dimming: the luminaire is dimmable; night-time dimming, for example between 23:00 and 06:00, limits energy use and light nuisance.
- Business only: Lichtplein supplies businesses only. Project prices apply from 20 columns and 100 luminaires.
Frequently asked questions
Which column height suits the faceted post-top?
A mounting height of 4 to 5 metres. The optics are designed for this; lower gives too small a pool of light, higher too little lux.
Is 1,500 lumens enough for a residential street?
In most residential streets it is. For the usual lighting classes (an average of 3 to 5 lux) 1,500 lumens at 4 metres is sufficient at a customary column spacing. A lighting calculation confirms the spacing for your situation.
Black or grey?
Black (RAL 9005) matches the powder-coated TURRIS column; grey (RAL 7045) suits galvanised or plain aluminium columns. Choose the colour that fits the existing street furniture.
Can I dim this luminaire?
Yes, the luminaire is dimmable. State the dimming regime you want with your request and we will match the version to it.
Can Lichtplein produce the lighting design?
Yes. For 350 euros excl. VAT we produce a lighting calculation based on your site plan, with column positions, heights and settings.
